Mirrors are the oldest trick in interior design, and still the most effective. The right mirror in the right place doubles the light in a room and makes the walls seem to step back. The wrong placement just reflects clutter.
Here's how to use mirrors to open up a small space.
1. Work with the window
A mirror on the wall beside a window, at a right angle to it, catches daylight and bounces it deeper into the room. A mirror directly opposite a window also brightens the space and reflects the view outside, so the room feels like it has a second window.
2. Go bigger than you think
One large mirror opens a room far more than several small ones. Small mirrors read as decoration; a big one reads as space. In a narrow hallway or bedroom, a full-length mirror visually widens the whole room.
3. Hang it at the right height
- On an open wall: centre the mirror about 150 cm from the floor.
- Above a console or sideboard: leave 15–25 cm between the furniture and the bottom of the mirror, and choose a mirror about two-thirds the width of the furniture.
- Full-length mirrors: lean them against the wall or hang them 10–20 cm off the floor.
4. Watch what it reflects
A mirror doubles whatever it faces. Place it opposite something worth seeing twice: a window, a chandelier, a piece of wall art. Avoid facing it toward a cluttered shelf or the kitchen sink.
5. Choose shapes that soften the room
- Organic and wavy shapes bring movement and feel modern and relaxed.
- Arched mirrors add height and an elegant, architectural feel.
- Wooden frames add warmth to living rooms and entrances.
- Backlit LED mirrors add soft glow at night, ideal for entrances and bathrooms.
Pieces we love
- Cloud-Shaped Full-Length Mirror, 60 × 160 cm — a soft organic shape that opens up bedrooms and hallways.
- Arched Floor Mirror with Coat Rack, 160 × 40 cm — mirror and storage in one, made for small entrances.
- Wooden Frame Mirror, 113 × 73 cm — a warm, large statement above a console or sofa.
- Pebble Backlit Mirror Set — a playful group of glowing shapes for an entrance wall.
Quick checklist
- Place it beside or opposite a window
- One large mirror beats several small ones
- Centre at about 150 cm on open walls
