Pendant lights over a kitchen island do two jobs at once. They light the counter where you chop, serve and eat, and they become the jewellery of the kitchen. Hang them wrong, though, and they either glare in your eyes or block the view across the room.
Here are the measurements that get it right.
1. How many pendants?
- Island or bar under 180 cm: two pendants.
- Island 180–250 cm: three pendants.
- One linear fixture also works at any length: choose one about two-thirds the length of the island.
Odd numbers (three) feel balanced on longer islands; two looks clean on smaller ones.
2. How far apart?
Space pendants 60–75 cm apart, measured from the centre of each one. Keep the outer pendants at least 15 cm in from each end of the island so the light falls on the counter, not the floor.
3. How high?
The bottom of each pendant should sit 75–90 cm above the countertop. That keeps the light close to the work surface while leaving a clear line of sight across the kitchen. In kitchens with high ceilings, stay at the lower end so the pendants don't look lost.
4. Choose the right style
- Black linear pendants suit modern and industrial kitchens, especially with marble or wood counters.
- Gold cage and cluster pendants add warmth and a touch of luxury to neutral kitchens.
- White pendants keep bright, Scandinavian-style kitchens light and airy.
- Clear or open designs are best when you want the light without blocking the view.
5. Get the bulbs right
Kitchens need clear, practical light. Choose neutral white (3000K–4000K) for food prep, or warm white (3000K) if the island doubles as a dining spot.
