How to Choose the Right Chandelier for Your Dining Room

The chandelier is the first thing guests notice when they sit down to eat. Get it right and the whole room feels finished. Get it wrong and even a beautiful fixture looks out of place, swallowed by the table or hanging so low that people duck around it.

The good news: choosing the right one comes down to a few simple measurements. Here's how to do it.

1. Start with the room size

Measure the length and width of your dining room in metres, add them together, and multiply by 8. The result is a good chandelier diameter in centimetres.

For example, a 4 m × 3.5 m dining room: (4 + 3.5) × 8 = 60 cm diameter.

This gives you a starting point. If your room has very high ceilings or is open to the living area, you can go one size up.

2. Then check it against the table

The table matters even more than the room. A chandelier should be between half and two-thirds the width of your table.

  • Table 90 cm wide → chandelier between 45 and 60 cm
  • Table 110 cm wide → chandelier between 55 and 75 cm

Keep the chandelier at least 15 cm narrower than the table on each side so no one bumps their head when standing up. For long rectangular tables that seat eight or more, consider a linear chandelier, or two smaller fixtures spaced evenly along the table.

3. Hang it at the right height

This is where most homes go wrong. The bottom of the chandelier should sit 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop: low enough to feel intimate, high enough that people can see each other across the table. If your ceiling is higher than 2.8 m, add about 7 cm for every extra 30 cm of ceiling height.

4. Choose a style that matches the room

Once you know the size, the style is about the mood you want.

  • Crystal chandeliers bring sparkle and a sense of occasion. They suit classic interiors and look stunning with warm light reflecting off every piece.
  • Sculptural gold designs feel modern but still luxurious. They pair well with marble tables, neutral walls and velvet chairs.
  • Linear and minimal fixtures suit long tables and contemporary homes, giving even light along the whole table.
  • Statement pieces work best in rooms with little other decoration, where the chandelier can be the focal point.

5. Get the light right

A beautiful chandelier with the wrong bulbs still looks cold. For dining rooms, choose warm white bulbs (2700K–3000K) and add a dimmer if you can. Bright light for everyday meals, low light for dinners with guests: one fixture, two moods.

Pieces we love for the dining room

Quick checklist

  • Room length + width (m) × 8 = diameter in cm
  • Chandelier width: ½ to ⅔ of the table width
  • Bottom of the fixture: 75–85 cm above the table
  • Long table? Go linear, or use two fixtures
  • Warm white bulbs and a dimmer
